I recently finished this commissioned portrait.

At some point in the early 1970s my grandmother Pauline and her double first cousin Nina (pronounced Nine-ah) opened a diner together.  The most sought after item on the menu: biscuits and gravy.  Business was a big success until chronic infighting between them caused a split, and eventually the diner folded.  My grandmother kept making her biscuits and gravy until she lost her mind in the 1980s.   I remember her always serving it up with an apology – “This isn’t very good” she’d say each time..  It was, of course – always the best batch she had ever made – each and every time.

I was at a Brooklyn courthouse waiting with around 75 other people to find out if we had to serve.   Several people who were summoned did not show up, which meant that anyone who could comprehend English and didn’t have a medical excuse would serve.

Same person who said, “I used to have a drug problem, but now I make enough money.”
